The failure of naturalists to provide information to the public has allowed some amazing myths to develop. Far worse, however, this knowledge gap can bring about actual damage to the environment through laws and public policy initiatives based on erroneous information. Growing Up Wild bridges this gap, bringing the latest results of scientific research to the public in an irreverent, humorous style that would make the book worth reading for entertainment value alone. The author, who combines careers as a wildlife professional and newspaper columnist, provides an eclectic mix of topics from toads to turkeys in a style that, while always humorous, ranges from gonzo journalism to formal poetrysometimes in the same essay. Many of the essays contained in the book began life as one of the authors weekly newspaper columns. These were supposed to focus on a single organism and give some interesting facts about it. That is, they were supposed to be typical nature pieces. The questions that came in, in response to the original columns, seemed to indicate that people were not even reading all the way through. So he changed the format to start out with some outrageous tale to pique the interest (and make people wonder how on earth this was going to segue to the real topic), move on to the main topic, then hook back to the anecdote at the end. The response was quite overwhelming. Since the material in this book has a mix of early and more recent columns, the reader can watch this style develop. There is something for everyone in this collection of essays. Topics range from single-celled organisms to whales. In addition to recreational reading, this book provides excellent supplementary material for students. In spite of the humor and light tone, each essay provides an in-depth look into the lives of our wild neighbors, as well as making some pointed commentary on the culture and political processes that affect them.

The Natural World of Ivy Lane relates the story of the wildlife on one acre. Thus arises the need to initiatively look back at the epoch of our existence on Earth as preceded by the following: survival of the fittest, search for food, where to live, sacrifices and rituals to appeal to God, brutalism against one another, religious sect formation, and deforestation due to uncontrollable population increase. Improvisation of wooden houses, trees of concrete, iron, and steel have been initiated, but, in a way, they have continually caused global warming to increase very much, at a gradual pace, as civilization advances through Machine Age/mechanized farming, industrialization, and technological advancements, space exploration, and globalization of industries and corporate organizations. The heat increases at an unusual, unprecedented level due to greenhouse gas emission and thus the assumed greenhouse releases a light-weight carbon dioxide (CO2) gas into the atmosphere, which is speculated to have formed impenetrable blanket. The presence of CO2 is an indicator, pointing to a fact that this gas in question had been released in the past and is presently being discharged uncontrollably. More so, there seems to be no end in sight as the CO2 continues to be sporadically expunged into the atmosphere. The process described above has continued to be expanding through all frontiers with no end in sight, where new neighborhoods are being built, Suburbs margining together as new Castles are evolving block by block, and concrete plazas are enveloping the Earth; so are the vegetative forest of trees are disappearing, causing global warming to increase exponentially. The increase becomes very much intense at an alarming rate in that it has now been considered to be adversely effective when found to be dangerously impacting the essence and every facet of life. Jim and Louise Bennett and their five children thought they were going to build a simple, uncomplicated, leisurely, and totally carefree retreat in the mountains. Most their Valley neighbors felt the same way. But in fact, what they really acquired was forty years of beauty, adventure, excitement and testing. The vision of having a cabin in the mountains was exciting and compelling, but what they actually experienced turned out to be far more so. There were no phones, no power with television and computers, and only seasonal river water when they built their Castle in the Mountain. In the cold of winter it was two miles over snow just to get to their cabin from their parked car and back. They experienced this wilderness area as it went through many changes, beginning as a rough undeveloped development to its present status as a highly coveted and well organized mountain recreational community. The history of that evolution contains volumes of exciting stories of adventure for residents and visitors alike. Mother Nature with the help of Murphy and his law, contributed to these adventures in many unexpected and unusual ways. Everyone was put to the test! That evolution was fueled by what the author calls the Spirit of Ski Tur Valley, a Spirit which bonded members of the community into a vital force that overcame many threats to their pristine retreat. Some of those threats came from Mother Nature herself, in the form of blizzards, floods, and avalanches, but others from high powered land developers intent on destroying the Valley as members knew and loved it.THE SPIRIT OF SKI TUR VALLEY is filled with true stories, some poignant, some of evacuation from flooding, of rescuing ill-fortuned hang-gliders, of bears breaking into left over birthday cake. There are tales of Mr. Bates, and Old Blaze, the truck that rescued his owner after ten years of separation. Because he was involved in Ski Tur Valley from its inception in the late sixties, and had lived there full time on a couple of occasions, Bennett was asked to collect stories from community members and present them in book form along with other background history. This remarkable book is based on a family log, kept by his wife Louise, along with contributions from the memories of community members and also from the archives of the Community Association , consisting of legal records, minutes of meeting and records of legal activity. All of these sources combine to unfold the story of THE SPIRIT OF SKI TUR VALLEY.

This program is designed to complement the natural sciences. Scientific concepts, while usually can be defined by specific criteria and procedures for classification, tend to look for inert information instead of dynamic information. This dynamism is what we promote here. That blood is red or that water is colorless are given knowledge that hardly encourages questioning or reflection. But lets suppose that it provides more information about the actual conditions of observation: it is said that the blood is red under the naked eye or that water is colorless in small quantity. Suppose also that in this case students are aware that what is true in parts need not be true for the whole, and vice versa. These students can be motivated to reflect and ask if blood continues to be red under a microscope or if water is without color in large quantities. In other words, to lead reflection with practice is what enhances the thinking abilities that should be inculcated in Lets Think about nature and these thinking skills cannot be achieved without a certain philosophical curiosity. There are several thinking abilities generated by philosophical questioning and transmitted to other disciplines through reading, writing, oral expression and the ability to pay attention. Heres some of them: providing reasons; asking questions; reasoning with matrices; inductive and deductive reasoning; causal thinking; standardization; immediate inferences; hypothetical reasoning; making inference; formation of concepts; discovery of assumptions; classification; description; realization of distinctions. instantiation; finding similarities; recognizing the relationship between part and whole and mean-end; argumentation; discriminative meanings; making comparisons; acknowledging ambiguities; defining; telling stories, etc. It would be quite exhausting to enumerate all the thinking skills and mental abilities promoted by philosophical questioning in the natural sciences, but these few are sufficient to give a general idea of how Lets Think About Nature can promote the development of children.

From the poor duck that was mystified by her own egg-laying abilities to finding snow ghosts, The Squirrels Goblet is a heart-warming collection of 56 true-life stories of natures wonders and antics. William James suggested that such a paradigm mustmeet two criteria: (1) it must explain each individual emotion (i.e., anxiety, anger, depression, etc.), and (2)it must relate all the emotions to each other. This book presents such a paradigm. It is based on the acceptedbiological principle that all organisms from the lowest to the highest function in two biological motives, which I call bipolar reactivity. All organisms seek pleasure and/or that which sustains and promotes life, andall organisms seek to avoid pain and/or that which threatens or disables life. Interestingly, this biologicalprinciple corresponds to a basic principle of Buddhist psychology that the pain we cause to ourselves andto each other is caused by the Three Poisons: desire, aversion, and ego. Desire and aversion link humansto the great chain of being, and ego distinguishes humans from all other beings and recognizes our uniquecapacity for symbolic reactivity. The knife is unique. Also, it is special because of its quality and handle. The tale tells how the knife gets found, and then travels from one hand to another. Yet, no hand was quite a good enough fit! Eventually, Henry, the craftsman of the knife, spies it in a pawnshop. Henry remembers that his buddy, who is named Bryan, missed it, so he buys it. Henry custom made the knife with a ghost handle because Bryan enjoyed Halloween and ghosts ever since he was a child. Bryan grew to become an outdoorsman. In the end, the tale reveals that all is not lost, but rather there is hope in events sometimes. Also, it presents that what is good for one may not be good for another.
