The bright teenager tells her story of growing up in a military family during a time when boys are dying in Vietnam, men are landing on the moon for the first time and her father, a mess sergeant in the Air Force, is ordered to a remote mission to Alaska. They move to her fathers hometown in Texas to have access to a military hospital and to be near family. To complicate Kate's problems, her immediate family, led by a Yankee mother, is faced for the first time with Southernisms, especially involving race relations. The feisty Kate- which is pronounced Kite in a Texas accent- keeps readers captivated and cheering for her throughout. Her story recalls eighteen months in a town full of people who can't help but admire her but wish she'd hurry up and conform so she will become the precious young lady they all know she can be. Life with her is never dull as Kite shares intimate moments such as when she tries to shave her legs, learns how to deceitfully fill the top of her first formal, experiences her first kiss and discovers boys can be teased without any effort at all. She takes life as it comes and tries to make it bend to her will. This isn't easy for a person who is colorblind in a segregated town. Her story is something to be cherished and pondered. The book is full of emotion as she struggles through a time in the late sixties when the raging Vietnam war was taking away boys as soon as they turned eighteen and wasnt always sending them home. The blood, sweat and tears of the civil rights movement was flooding much of the country and causing enormous change. But it had made not a trickle into some small towns, including where Kite must live while her father is away.Kites life changes rapidly. She would have preferred her biggest worry be about how to wear her hair. But, she can't keep societal changes out of the context of her personal life. She cant just be a kid anymore, with a hula hoop and a bag of jax.The story begins with a forward explaining the workings of her family, opens a door into her personality and tells how Kite came to live in a small Texas town in 1968 where no one seemed to know about the Beatles or that racism was against the law.She is accepted in the town because she is kin to almost everyone. Her Texas kinfolk believe there is one Glory Child born into their family each generation that is destined for some kind of greatness. Kite seems to be the chosen one since she is beautiful, has a genius I.Q. and is very outspoken. Kite takes this Glory Child business all in stride, mostly because that is her personality and the title loses significance to her since her father was supposedly his generations Glory Child and she knew of nothing exceptional he ever did.Kite does appreciate being accepted and enjoys - as most teens would - fitting in as quickly as possible. Especially since her parents moved her into such a peculiar place where people speak slower and think unlike anyone shes met while growing up on multi-ethnic Air Force bases. The transition is not as easy for the rest of her family and her mother is somewhat of an outcast since she comes from a state that fought against the confederacy. A confusing point for Kite who thought the war between the states was over except for its historical relevance. The story moves quickly with something consequential occurring on each page as Kite and the town grow up together. The people are unusual but real. Kite is an honest soul and does not hold back as she moves the story along with her innocent and often self-centered insights into a complicated world when perspectives about women, race and other important issues were changing in a way that would affect generations to come.

As long as she could remember, Melody wanted a horse of her own, preferably a black one like the ones she saw in The Black Stallion or Black Beauty. Her stories recall rural Ireland in a timeless time before cars, radios and electricity. On the wild mountainsides above the fertile valley farms, stray animals, domestic and wild, and a few odd folks lived together in a world of their own where the Leprechaun and the Fairies were everyday neighbors. Matts owner, Dr. David de Cohen Nassy, a Jewish planter and unofficial physician, bankrupt and depressed, seeks a new start in North America. When he travels there in 1792 he also takes his Negro slave who was born on the now-lost Nassy coffee plantation and knows no family but that of his master. Gradually Matt comes to believe that life in the new world could hold great promise for him, too. Once in Philadelphia, Matts master rises to social and professional success and becomes a naturalized American citizen. Matt, too adapts rapidly to his new life in the city. He meets and befriends Jed, another young slave, who inspires Matt to hope for freedom. Best of all, Matt persuades his master to allow him to learn how to read and write. When the first American hot-air balloon flight is launched from Philadelphia Matt is a proud spectator as he watches his master participate in the event. When Matt overhears his master speaking to a friend about the prevailing anti-slavery movement greatly favored in Philadelphia he believes Dr. Nassy is thinking of liberating him. He is terribly disappointed when this does not happen. Within a year a major yellow fever epidemic breaks out in Philadelphia. The city is in panic and distress. Five thousand people die, one out of every four citizens. Matt becomes a great help his master and his steady companion. There a fellow West Indian colleague is the chief physician. In the presence of Dr. Nassy he performs several autopsies that confirm to Matts master his medical treatment methods are justified. After the epidemic Matt again hopes that he will finally be emancipated, but his owners financial problems prevent it. The doctor opens an apothecary shop in Philadelphia and needs Matt to help him run it. His masters health is not compatible with the Philadelphia climate. As soon as the French Revolution establishes cherished civil rights in Europe and European colonies, Dr. Nassy decides to return to Surinam and his home in the Jooden Savanna, the Jewish settlement. Before he leaves Philadelphia he takes Matt to the Abolition Society and in a formal ceremony signs the document which will eventually free Matt. En route home, Matt is a proud witness as the Danish government honors Dr. Nassy with an official doctorate for his successful Yellow Fever work in Philadelphia. Since graduating from West Point in 1974, I have visited over forty countries in my military and business career. Everywhere Ive been I have looked for articles or stories that I could include in this book. Many short stories came from friends and sources marked -Unknown. This book is dedicated to young people everywhere and written for their benefit. I realize that many young people today would rather buy a CD or DVD rather than a guidebook or an owners manual- a book about how to improve their lives from just an average Joe. Some young people will only get this book if a parent, grandparent, aunt, uncle or probation officer gives it to them as a gift. I hope it is a gift worth keeping and sharing. Today, young people struggle with finding good examples of role models. My first role model was David Cortez while attending Rhodes Junior High School in San Antonio, Texas. David was a ninth grader and our Student Council President. He helped me with my successful political campaign to be the next Student Council Secretary. I thought David walked on water. David came from a strong family. He was smart, athletic, and good-looking. He had a beautiful girlfriend. Davids story has a sad ending. He went on to Jefferson High, where he also excelled. He married his girlfriend- the girl of his dreams. A few years later, she tragically died in a car accident. Not much later in life, David, still a widower, died of a mysterious illness, leaving behind two young daughters. Parents should be their own kids role models, but sometimes we, too, fall short of setting the good example for our kids. Parents lose credibility and respect because, from their kids perspective, it seems like we were never young and rebellious. HELLO!!! We were. It is hard to believe, but we were and it was tough back then, too. It may actually be harder now in many ways- more distractions, more toys, more peer pressure, more drugs, more gang violence, more graffiti, more sexual promiscuity, more TV, more video games and cyberspace but less family interaction and influence. Teachers, who genuinely care about their students future success, are also rare. Teachers can be excellent role models and I applaud anyone who goes into this most honorable profession. In the business world, prudence is ignored and now takes a backseat to personal gain at any cost, recklessness, corruption and greed in some of our largest banks and corporations. In politics, the candidates tell the electorate whats popular rhetoric: who can be against better healthcare for all, better education for our children, and a strong defense. Once elected or defeated they find it difficult to work with the opposition for the benefit of our communities and nation. Todays politicians are no longer statesmen but socialists bent on ridiculous spending programs and bailouts of mismanaged banks, companies and corrupt governments around the world at an exorbitant cost to American taxpayers. Having said all this, I am still optimistic about our country and about many of our youth and their positive impact on our society and our world. I wish I could say that I am optimistic about all of them, but unfortunately, it will be just a few of them that will make a difference. But these few will be the leaders of tomorrow, the peacemakers, the inventors, the farmers, the space explorers, the scientists, the teachers and the caregivers that will make all the difference in our world. Their answers to our worlds problems and challenges will come from within- from a strong sense of leadership, character and responsibility, self-discipline; and respect for self, the unborn, the elderly, religious freedoms, strong families, authority and the environment. I should say at this time that the Parkers married rather late in life and by the time Rosie was born, Tom was 38 and Rita was 35 and each was rather set in their ways. At a very young age, he learned that there was a time to work and a time to play. At home, he helped his parents do the farm chores like milk the cows, gather eggs, and plant corn. However, in school, Theodore would sometimes sneak away with his friends and play baseball behind Mr. Johnsons barn. Although he knew that skipping classes was not right, he could not help himself from playing; this was his dreamto be a great mouse baseball player. Will Theodore still achieve his dream? Packed with lessons, The Adventures of Theodore Mouse reminds young readers about the beauty of having an ambition but using the correct means to achieve it. Understanding how this advantage has kept the zebras off the endangered species list, he designs a Corporate Zebra Strategy that allows him and his fellow workers to stay just below the radar and out of sight of their main adversaries, the corporate bloodletters, usually referred to as re-engineers, six sigma gurus, quality assurance analysts and consultants. Presenting a look at the inner workings of an international corporation in the midst of a down-sizing, the play addresses an issue immediately relevant to our times in a funny and light-hearted way by poking fun at the underlying character and ethics (or lack thereof) of the corporate bloodletters. As outrageous caricatures of greed and corruption, the bloodletters afford the audience a good belly laugh even though the theater goers may collectively squirm in their seats as they recognize more than just a tad of themselves in some of the characters. These concepts are essential to the sense of community. The point is that any community is complex and diverse. The only way to ensure harmony in such a setting is to operate in solidarity, a term which entails mutual support and collaboration.
