He also talks about the human intuition. One they didnt know a thing about the size or capability of the Vladivostock Fleet and two they could remedy this ignorance by photographing the Flotilla as it passed through the narrow channel. The job was given to Naval Intelligence, and crack teams of radio intercept and direction finding equipment operators were sent to the site for three consecutive Summers. They were to locate and track the Fleet to the Strait at which time a team of civilian experts would photograph the Soviet ships in all their glory. Our people were aware, they would certainly pass through at night and in a thunderstorm if that could be arranged, so they were equipped with State of the Art infra-red cameras with 1000 MM lenses. In three years these incredibly complex and expensive efforts yielded absolutely nothing! The story opens with our hero, Frank Throckmorton, giving the reader a detailed tour of the village. Throck, as he is called by his mates, takes us through the backbone of the local economy, the Crab Cannery. We witness the entire process, from the boat to the six ounce cans. We are introduced to Jakes Sake house, the only bar in town and visit the general store and laundry. We learn a great deal about the cliff, the obsolete artillery gun placements and the tunnel on the cornice and the bunker, above it all, making not only a great year-round playground for the local children but a wonderful venue for a bunch of intelligence types trying to spy on the Russian Navy. We meet the spy guys early on. They live and work in the large bunker above the tunnel. They are civilian and older than Throcks people. They wear 45 caliber pistols and are nasty and arrogant. They act mysteriously, have their own jeep and dont like Throcks people at all. We flash back several months to the top-secret Intelligence Facility back at Chitose. We learn that our heroes serve two masters. Captain Moffet, Regular Army Infantry, commands the base where they live, sleep, eat and play poker. Moffet has no knowledge of what they do at the heavily guarded operations center a short bus trip away and he doesnt hide his resentment. Colonel Robert Blankenship commands the operations center and although Moffet has described these trick-two people as gambling, womanizing drunks, Blankenship knows they are the best at what they do. Blankenship is very young to be a Bird Colonel and is considered a G-2 wunderkind back at the Pentagon who is destined to become a General very soon. Jack has no idea Magnus was a young member of the Vipers and at that time a devout follower of Pete Sorensen. In return for maintaining and even intensifying his relationship with Sorensen, who manages to hold down a customer service job at a prestigious international bank in Copenhagen, between stays at the asylum, Magnus offers our hero a real job at a nearby shipyard as a ships rigger in the biggest drydock in Northern Europe. You mean you want me to spy on him, says Jack, not too happy with the proposition. Something like that, smiles Johansen. Jack takes the job, after all it will double his income, and goes to work for Aksel Holmgren who manages the drydock and crew of ten very experienced riggers. He assimilates very well and quickly learns the art of rigging from, as his mates were fond of saying, the very best scaffold hangers on the face of the earth. He is happy and likes the work a great deal. It is not long before he finds out that Aksel was also a member of the Vipers working under their leader Pete Sorensen. He learns that a raid on a Nazi munitions plant in June, 1944 went very badly and all the Vipers, save three, were mowed down by well placed German machine guns. They were obviously betrayed. Pete, Aksel and Magnus escaped miraculously by swimming across the harbor and vanishing into the city. It has always been obvious, to anyone knowing the entire story, that one of these three is a Quisling, a rat, an informer. But which one? Sixteen years have gone by and they have each led productive lives, discounting Sorensens stays in the asylum, of course. No signs of regret or remorse....that were visible in any event. Magnus is hoping Pete will reveal something to Jack during one of their drinking sessions at Johns bar. Aksel wonders why Magnus prevailed on him to hire the inexperienced American who knows nothing about rigging and speaks no Danish. He keeps his regular job entailing an exhausting daily commute, making for a very long day and leaving much of the degrading supers work to Mary and 12 year old Jimmy. Jimmy attends PS.39 and learns quickly the only way to survive at an all boys junior high school, cited by Look magazine as one of the nations roughest, is with his fists. Always the dreamer, John decides to book horse bets himself at work. After Mo declines an offer of half the profits in return for bank rolling the modest venture, John borrows $500 from his brother in law and moves ahead.
