Ecclesiastical History of England

Ecclesiastical History of the English People is a historical work by Bede, completed in 731 CE. It is one of the most important sources for early English history and the development of Christianity in Britain. The book traces the history of the English Church from the Roman occupation of Britain up to Bede’s own time in the early 8th century. It focuses especially on the spread of Christianity among the Anglo-Saxons and the gradual conversion of various kingdoms. A major portion of the work describes key figures such as St. Augustine of Canterbury, who was sent from Rome to convert the Anglo-Saxons, and important kings like Edwin of Northumbria, whose conversion marked a turning point for Christianity in northern England. Bede also records the famous Synod of Whitby (664 CE), where a major debate was held between Roman and Celtic Christian traditions over the calculation of Easter and other practices. The Roman tradition was ultimately adopted, helping unify the English Church under Roman authority.
