Journey to the Center of the Earth is a science fiction adventure novel by Jules Verne, first published in 1864. It is one of the earliest and most influential “Voyages extraordinaires” novels, combining scientific curiosity with imaginative exploration.
The story begins when Professor Otto Lidenbrock, a passionate and impatient geologist, discovers a coded manuscript written by an Icelandic alchemist. After deciphering it with his nephew Axel, he learns it supposedly describes a route to the center of the Earth through a volcanic crater in Iceland.
Lidenbrock, Axel, and their Icelandic guide Hans descend into the extinct volcano Snæfellsjökull and begin a long underground journey. As they travel deeper, they encounter vast subterranean landscapes, including underground oceans, strange rock formations, and prehistoric life that appears to have survived beneath the Earth’s crust.
One of the most famous sequences is their discovery of a hidden sea where they witness ancient creatures such as giant marine reptiles and other prehistoric fauna, suggesting a world untouched by surface evolution.
Eventually, after a series of dangers and misdirections, the group is forced upward by volcanic activity and is expelled back to the surface through a different volcano in southern Italy, Mount Etna.
