The Tenant of Wildfell Hall

The story begins with Gilbert Markham, a young, ambitious farmer who lives in the small village of Lundleigh, becoming intrigued by a new neighbor, Helen Graham, who has recently moved into the dilapidated Wildfell Hall. Helen is a woman of mystery, and rumors quickly spread about her past, as well as the circumstances surrounding her departure from her former home. Despite the gossip, Gilbert becomes fascinated by her and attempts to befriend her. Helen, however, remains aloof and somewhat suspicious of Gilbert’s advances. It is only over time, as Gilbert continues to visit Wildfell Hall, that she opens up to him, revealing her past through letters she has written to a friend, which are interspersed throughout the novel.
