Up from Slavery: An Autobiography

Up from Slavery is an influential autobiography by Booker T. Washington that recounts his journey from enslavement to becoming one of the most prominent Black leaders in the United States. The book begins with Washington’s early life as an enslaved child in the American South during the Civil War era. After emancipation, he works in poverty while pursuing education with great determination. He eventually gains admission to the Hampton Institute, where he develops the philosophy that education, discipline, and practical skills are key to racial uplift and economic independence. Washington later becomes the founder and leader of the Tuskegee Institute in Alabama, a school dedicated to vocational and industrial education for African Americans. He describes the challenges of building the institution, gaining funding, and advocating for education in the face of severe racial discrimination.
