Hard Times

The novel is set in the fictional industrial town of Coketown and focuses on the lives of Thomas Gradgrind, a strict educator who values only facts and logic, and his children Louisa and Tom. Raised without imagination or emotional freedom, they struggle with the effects of a society that ignores human feelings and creativity. The story also explores the lives of industrial workers, especially Stephen Blackpool, a poor factory worker facing hardship and injustice. Through the contrast between wealthy industrialists and struggling laborers, Dickens criticizes the social problems created by industrialization.
