Jude the Obscure

Jude the Obscure tells the story of Jude Fawley, a working-class man with lofty intellectual ambitions, and his struggle against the social, moral, and emotional constraints of his time. Born in poverty in rural England, Jude dreams of attending the prestigious University of Christminster (a fictionalized version of Oxford), hoping to transcend his humble origins through academic achievement. However, his dreams are constantly thwarted by his social class and personal circumstances, and he is unable to escape the downward spiral of misfortune.

At a young age, Jude marries Arabella Donn, a woman of low morals who deceives him into marriage. Their union quickly deteriorates, and they part ways. Jude's hopes for a better life are further complicated by his complex, sometimes painful relationship with his intellectual cousin Sue Bridehead. Sue is a feminist and intellectual who challenges the Victorian views on love, marriage, and social norms. Although she and Jude share a deep emotional bond, their relationship is marred by guilt, societal rejection, and personal conflicts.
