Morella

Morella is a short Gothic horror story by Edgar Allan Poe, first published in 1835. It is one of Poe’s early tales exploring themes of identity, death, and the persistence of the self beyond the grave. The story is narrated by an unnamed husband who marries a highly intelligent and deeply philosophical woman named Morella. She becomes intensely absorbed in mystical and metaphysical studies, particularly ideas related to the soul, identity, and reincarnation. As their relationship progresses, the narrator grows increasingly uneasy with Morella’s intellectual intensity and her fixation on abstract philosophical concepts. Eventually, Morella becomes ill and dies during childbirth, leaving behind a daughter. After her death, the narrator raises the child, who strangely resembles Morella in appearance and personality. As the child grows, the resemblance becomes more disturbing, especially when the narrator considers naming her. At the moment of baptism, the narrator gives the child her mother’s name—Morella—and immediately she dies, suggesting a supernatural or psychological return of the original identity.
