Nicholas Nickleby

The story follows Nicholas Nickleby, a young man who is left responsible for supporting his mother and sister after his father’s death. He seeks help from his wealthy but cruel uncle, Ralph Nickleby, whose greed and selfishness lead Nicholas into difficult situations. Along the way, Nicholas confronts injustice, especially through his experiences at Dotheboys Hall, a harsh boarding school run by the abusive Wackford Squeers. The novel combines social criticism, humor, adventure, and family drama. Dickens uses Nicholas’s journey to explore themes such as poverty, exploitation, kindness, loyalty, and the contrast between compassion and greed. It is considered one of Dickens’s major early novels.
