The Autobiography of Benjamin Franklin is Benjamin Franklin’s unfinished memoir, written in several parts between 1771 and 1790. It is one of the most famous autobiographies in American literature and also a practical guide to self-improvement, not just a life story.
Franklin begins with his early life in Boston, where he was born in 1706 into a large, modest family. He describes leaving school at a young age, working in his brother’s printing press, and eventually running away to Philadelphia as a teenager to start a new life. From there, the book follows his rise as a printer, writer, inventor, scientist, diplomat, and one of the Founding Fathers of the United States.
A major theme is Franklin’s focus on self-improvement and discipline. He outlines his famous “13 virtues” system—such as temperance, industry, and humility—which he tried to practice methodically to improve his character. He also reflects on his habits of saving money, managing time, and building useful social networks.
