The History of Herodotus

The History of Herodotus is an English translation and edition of the ancient Greek work by Herodotus, translated by G. C. Macaulay. Originally written in the 5th century BCE, Herodotus’ work is one of the earliest surviving attempts to systematically record historical events and explain their causes. Macaulay’s edition makes this foundational text accessible in English while preserving its narrative style and scope. The work itself covers a wide range of material centered on the Greco-Persian conflicts, especially the Persian Wars between Greece and the Achaemenid Empire. However, it is not limited to military history. Herodotus also includes extensive digressions on the customs, geography, and traditions of many peoples he encountered or heard about, including Egyptians, Persians, Scythians, and others.
