The Thompson FamilyThe Thompson family originally hails from Scotland. The earliest known ancestor is Thomas Thompson, who was born in 1545 in Glasgow. Matthew Thompson (1692-1753) emigrated from County Donegal, Ireland to Philadelphia, in 1732. He then moved to Virginia in 1741. The Thompsons were Scotch-Irish Presbyterians.
