BIOCHEMISTRY FOR PHARMACISTS

The subject of Biochemistry in the new syllabus proposed by Pharmacy Council of India is yet another link between the subjects of Anatomy, Physiology and that of Pathophysiology. If a disease is to be understood, then basic anatomy/physiology in the context of causative factors and pathophysiological changes caused by them need to be comprehended. Such changes are also associated with alteration in metabolic pathways. For knowing metabolic pathways, knowledge of Biochemistry is essential. Not only this, but for knowing mechanism of action of drugs, their interactions and adverse reactions to drugs, understanding of Human Biochemistry is very necessary. The developments in Genetics are opening new challenges possibly taking us to personalization of medicines.
