rom Beyond is a short horror story by H. P. Lovecraft, written in 1920 and first published in 1934. It is one of Lovecraft’s key works exploring the idea that reality is far larger—and more terrifying—than human perception can normally detect. The story follows an unnamed narrator who visits his friend, the eccentric scientist Crawford Tillinghast. Tillinghast has developed a strange machine that stimulates the human senses beyond their natural limits. He claims it allows perception of an invisible realm that exists alongside ordinary reality.When the machine is activated, the narrator begins to perceive horrifying, unseen entities moving through space—beings that were always present but normally invisible. These entities seem to occupy the same physical world, yet exist on a different perceptual layer, suggesting reality is stacked with unseen dimensions. As the experiment escalates, Tillinghast becomes increasingly obsessed and unstable, revealing that extended exposure to this expanded perception has psychological and physical consequences.
