Herland is a utopian novel by Charlotte Perkins Gilman, first published in 1915. It is one of the most influential early works of feminist speculative fiction.
The story follows three male explorers—Van, Terry, and Jeff—who discover a hidden, isolated society composed entirely of women who reproduce through parthenogenesis (without men). This society, called Herland, has existed peacefully for generations without war, poverty, or major social conflict.
As the men are introduced to Herland, they are struck by how orderly, cooperative, and educated the society is. The women have developed advanced systems of child-rearing, education, and community planning, all centered on collective well-being rather than competition or dominance. However, the novel also focuses on the clash of perspectives between the male visitors and the women of Herland. Each man represents a different attitude toward gender roles and society: one becomes respectful and adaptive, another struggles with control and entitlement, and the third remains deeply resistant to change.
