The Hairy Ape: A Comedy of Ancient and Modern Life in Eight Scenes

The Hairy Ape is a 1922 expressionist play by Eugene O’Neill. Despite its subtitle calling it “A Comedy of Ancient and Modern Life in Eight Scenes,” it is generally regarded as a dark tragedy about industrialization, identity, and class conflict. The play follows Yank, a powerful and confident stoker who works in the engine room of a transatlantic ocean liner. At the beginning, he believes he “belongs” to the ship’s machinery—he feels strong, necessary, and in control within the world of industrial labor. Everything changes when Mildred Douglas, a wealthy young woman from the upper class, briefly visits the stokehole and is horrified by Yank’s appearance, calling him a “filthy beast.” This moment shatters Yank’s sense of identity and belonging. After being rejected, Yank travels through different spaces—first the ship’s upper decks, then New York City—trying to find where he fits in society. However, he is consistently alienated by both the wealthy elite and the working class, leaving him increasingly isolated. Eventually, Yank becomes obsessed with understanding where he belongs in the “structure” of modern life. His search leads him to a gorilla in a zoo, which he tries to release, believing it to be his true “brother.” The encounter ends tragically, underscoring his complete disconnection from both nature and society.
