The Man of the Crowd is a short story by Edgar Allan Poe, first published in 1840. It is often considered one of Poe’s earliest “urban psychological” stories, focusing less on plot and more on observation and obsession. The story is narrated by an unnamed observer sitting in a London coffeehouse. He becomes fascinated by the variety of people passing through the busy streets outside and begins to categorize them based on appearance and behavior. Most of the crowd is easily understood, but one man stands out as deeply strange and unreadable. This mysterious “man of the crowd” appears agitated, constantly moving through different parts of the city, never stopping, and seemingly following no clear purpose. Intrigued, the narrator decides to follow him through the streets of London, tracking him for an entire night and into the next day. As the pursuit continues, the narrator observes that the man seems to drift through every layer of urban life—wealthy districts, poor neighborhoods, gambling halls, and crowded markets—yet never interacts meaningfully with anyone. He appears both part of the crowd and completely alien to it. Eventually, the narrator gives up, realizing that the man cannot be “read” or understood as an individual. The story ends with the famous implication that he is “the type and the genius of deep crime,” suggesting he represents something fundamentally unknowable.
